Hi all - wanted to get your thoughts on how we can get set up with prizes for next year's contest. Scott and I have talked about a few different ideas.
For example, if anyone has prize ideas that they would be able to help arrange, that would be great!
Scott also thought of an interesting idea of having a donate button on the site - the $ would go towards the purchase of the prizes and a portion of the money raised could go to a charity like the "Make A wish Foundation".
Thoughts? |

I think we should be able to donate something for a prize for the next season. I suggest any donators should specify the opposite category from the one they are entering the contest in.
The only problem with a donate button would be manner of payment ... usually requires Paypal, CreditCard, etc.
Also, I am putting together some thoughts on trying to increase our active membership. There are lots of decent displays around and maybe some of these people may be interested in this great group.
I will try and make a new topic on this later today.

I would like to chime in here and give my thoughts on prizes.
I am thinking that maybe Canadian forum members could send Longshadow (Jim) a check or money order in the amount of there choice. (Of course we might want to open the contest to New Zealand as a token of good friendship....have a separate prize for them say a Money order to the winner in NZ.
I also believe that a PayPal Donation Button is a great idea, and it is a safe way to donate, and should be added to the forum. Yet people can send checks or money orders if they feel safer in doing that.
If needs be Longshadow can have a list on the forum all of the donors as a way of countability.
I think that $5.00 out of every $30.00 should go to a Charity on behalf of Christmaslights.ca....and Longshadow can give a gift donation to a charity that the forum members agree on sometime in early December.
Anyhow what ever money comes in before the Lor sale begins will go towards a new controller for the computerized display contest.
Question: As a Static Display Winner, would you be interested in a Lor controller and Lor Basic software, or a gift card?
That questions would need to be answered before the Lor summer sale.
So how does everyone feel about what I wrote above?

I would look into a Canadian club/organization to help with this. They can organize prizes and charities and promote the site for you as well.

We can't speak for other static display members, but we personally want to stay static. We have nothing against LOR and other computerized displays, but we love keeping our yard as a static interactive walk-through ... changing every year.
So ... for us at least, the possibility of winning gift cards (or LEDs) would be the best.

That is good to know. Your Static Display is one of a kind and I would not blame you to keep it as is. Your display is a winter wonderland landmark.
Anyhow I second the question that Daryl asked:"Where do I find the donate button???"?
Lets go for it.

| Hi All - I added a donate button to the top. I've created a separate code for ChristmasLights.ca so I can easily keep track of what is donated. |

I just did the donation thing and after working through the PayPal page the redirection went to an error page. I don't know exactly how it works, but possibly a bad url for the return to this forum!!
Is there possibly a way that a progress meter could be implemented?

Hmmm weird.. I'll see if I can see why it gave an error. I got the notification though...
How do you think we should try to do the progress meter? Would I list names and amounts? I know with other things I have done in the past, donors have wanted to keep the amount they donated cloaked. Not sure what the consensus is here.. |

I think a simple donation scale. $300.00 $500.00 $800.00 $1000.00 $1200.00 $1500.00
Etc but with a thermometer that inches its way up.
No names, no donation amounts.

No names no amounts. You should be able to find or create a code for a thermometer, then just have an updated date on it and update it every week. I will see if I can find one for you.

LongShadow I sent you the email with a few codes. I am not sure if everyone is aware but I would also make mention that PayPal takes 2.9% + $0.30 off every transaction.

I think perhaps the increments should be smaller as this is a forum with few people in comparison to the other larger forums. The donation rate and size will probably correspond to the amount of people that participate. We don't want to scare away any potential donations thinking that they can't donate enough so in turn they don't bother. Maybe do it in $50.00 increments. I also agree with Scott, no names and amounts. Just my .02 worth, now back to work for me.

I think the smaller scale would be good too. |
